2013 NFL Draft: Should Kansas City Chiefs Select QB Geno Smith?

Should the Kansas City Chiefs select QB Geno Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft?

It’s a valid question that will be asked more and more with each passing day leading up to April 25.

After an absolutely abysmal 2-14 season in 2012 with Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn at the helm, you would think that the top pick would be set in stone for this new regime heading into the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.  But it’s not.

There’s plenty of uncertainty.  We do know though that quarterback is hands down this team’s top need.  Cassel and Quinn completed 273 of 474 passes (57 percent) for 2,937 yards with eight TDs to 18 INTs combined this past season.

But the free agency pool is shallow and most big boards don’t feature a quarterback even in the Top 15.  But if Kansas City, or any team for that matter, is going to select a quarterback with the first pick, it will be Geno Smith.

West Virginia’s most accurate and prolific passer in school history put up video game type of numbers throughout his collegiate career and completed 369 of 518 passes (71 percent) for 4,265 yards with 42 TDs to six INTs in 2012.

Smith certainly isn’t in the same class as Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, he does possess the physical tools, leadership and work ethic to emerge as a Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco-level NFL starter, according to NFL’s Future.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock sees things differently.

According to Mayock, the Chiefs have four options if don’t trade down and take a player with the top pick.  None of those options include selecting a quarterback.  In fact, all four prospects are offensive linemen (Alabama guard Chance Warmack, North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper, Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel and Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher).

“This is a draft in which the top-shelf players don’t stand apart too much, and there might not be a huge difference between picks No. 5 and 25,” writes Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com. “That makes it a tricky spot for the Chiefs.”

Kansas City is interested in Nick Foles, who could be the odd man out with the Philadelphia Eagles.  It would make sense if the Chiefs decided to trade the first overall pick to the Eagles for Foles and the fourth overall pick.

Though options are limited on the open market, there are a few other QBs that could take their talents to KC, like Alex Smith, Matt Flynn or Kevin Kolb.  Kolb or Foles would seem to have a better chance to land with the Chiefs than Flynn or Alex Smith, because of their experience with Andy Reid, but GM John Dorsey was brought up in a draft-and-develop system.

There’s a very good possibility that the Chiefs will take an offensive lineman with their first selection (Luke Joeckel would be the most likely and worthy option) after allowing a whopping 40 sacks this past season.

Kansas City could also select another quarterback that it covets at the bottom of the first or start of the second round.

Matt Barkley, Mike Glennon, Tyler Wilson and E.J. Manuel could potentially become the future franchise quarterback.

But if the team is truly sold on Geno Smith, the top pick may be the only place to take him with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets all picking in the Top 10 and still looking to find their future franchise quarterback.
